Why does my Toyota Prado go into limp mode?

Sounds a bit like its going into limp mode, if its happening in traffic engine temp might be an issue. The gauge in the Prado (and many other makes) is dulled so it doesn’t react until the temp is very high, I’ve seen 96 degrees on my scangauge and the dash gauge is still on half like it always is.
