What does it mean when it says Exhaust Fluid Empty?
The DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) light is a driver warning system that lets you know when your DEF tank is nearly empty. This affects truck drivers more than it does drivers of passenger vehicles.
Where is the DEF level sensor?
A DEF quality sensor is mounted on the side of the DEF tank. This sensor detects the Urea concentration in the DEF to confirm it is acceptable for effective dosing (approximately 32.5% Urea).
How does a DEF level sensor work?
The DEF level sensor, which is part of the DEF sending unit, measures the level of fluid remaining in the DEF tank. When the liquid level is low, the DEF level sensor sends a signal to the vehicle’s ECU which then triggers the warning light on the gauges or panel.
Why is my DEF light on?
Generally, a warning light will come on when DEF needs to be added soon. If the light is ignored for too long, the vehicle will likely go into a reduced power mode. If the DEF level falls too low, the engine will not start until fluid is added.
