What should I do if my gas tank overflows?
# 2 fill your car up until it stops fueling ( the nozzle clicks off ) . You can add a little to get to an even # on the pump , then stop . Do not fill your vehicle until it overflows with fuel . There are emission control devices in the tank and these do not need to be drowned with fuel .
Why is my gas tank not venting when I fill it?
If someone put something in the filler tube, use a flash light to look down the tube to see if you can see it and maybe pull it out with a coat hanger with a bend on the end. But more likely your problem is with a sticking EVAP vent valve. When this fails it does not allow the tank to vent when filling and causes the trouble you are having.

The gas cap is sealed, the venting is done through the line Tim mentioned. There are three lines to the tank. 3/8, 5/16, and 1/4 inch. 3/8 is the supply line. Fuel is pumped through this line from the tank to the fuel metering body. (No TBI on a 97 Vortec). The 5/16 returns excess fuel from the metering body back to the tank.

I’m also having this problem with my 2000 GMC Sierra SL c2500 5.7. It creates a vacuum and collapses the fuel tank. Im on my third fuel tank but didn’t realize at first a vacuum was crushing it. Any ideas? It seems the more I read, the more possibilities that could cause it but its getting expensive with the tanks and pumps.

Spent today under the car pulling off the old evap canister and then proceeding to put compressed air through the lines to remove as much charcoal particles as I could. Got everything connect back together and went to fill up. Issue remains. Can get about 1.5 gallons in the tank before it shuts off.

How long does it take to fill a GMC Sierra gas tank?
2007 GMC Sierra 4.8 Vortec. Question Here.: There is a restriction between the gas fill goose neck and the tank making it accept gas but very slow. It takes about 10 minutes to put in 20 litres of fuel. Can I fix this myself. I have been told that if I shove a garden hose in the filler neck I can force the restriction into the tank.
