VTEC DOES NOT BURN OIL. Its the increase load on the engine along with more valve lift. The valves go further down the stem and there can be varnish on the top of the stem cause the previous owner never punched it and it varnished up.

How much oil should I put in my Honda Accord?
What brand of oil are you using, some brands darken sooner. Honda says 1 qt. used per 1K is normal. Check for any leaks like the back of the valve cover, maybe change the PCV valve, if you are doing a lot of city type driving that may effect your oil useage.
