What do the notches on a dipstick mean?

I checked the oil. According to my owner’s manual, it was way overfilled (way above both the F hole (indicating full when cold) and the notch (indicating full with thermal expansion).

Why does the oil dipstick only go in one direction?

The dipstick really only goes in properly in one direction. That’s how you should be reading it. The stick scraping on the tube, on the way out, is what’s causing what you’re seeing. Lots of discussion about this. The different readings on the two sides are because the dipstick goes into the oil pan on an angle.

What does it mean when your dipstick oil is brown?

If the oil drop spreads out over the water’s surface (instead of beading up like a new oil) it may be time for an oil change. Brown bubbles or a dried crusty-brown residue above the oil level line on the dipstick could be an indication that coolant (water and antifreeze) has leaked into your engine.

Which is the correct way to insert a dipstick?

As noted above, the dipstick should be inserted only one way. This puts the F an L markings “on top”. The dipstick handle should be oriented toward the front. (See the Owners Manual for diagrams.) the_josh,…did you notice there is a new guy named mr_josh ?

What kind of Oil can you smell from the dipstick?

The odor of diesel fuel can often be detected right from the dipstick. Free and emulsified water is harmful to the oil and the engine. For short-trip drivers, water condensation may be more acute if your engine has the flexible fuel vehicle (FFV) option and you are burning an alcohol-gasoline fuel blend.

Is there a driver side dipstick on a 350?

I know that early 350’s had a driver side dipstick and the later ones (80’s?) had passenger side dipsticks. This one has both. Any ideas? When I got it, it had a passenger side pan on it. But, could I just get a early style pan and call it good? Anyone seen one of these before?

How to read the oil level on a dip stick?

After turning it off let the oil settle for 10-15 minutes then pull the stick wipe it, replace it and pull it again checking the level. Continual checking just drags oil up the tube which then smears on your dip stick making it hard to get an accurate reading.
