Of course they couldn’t read it with a scanner when it wasn’t working, there was no communication on the Class2 data line. This isn’t something you’re going to fix poking and prodding, and you may even do more damage. The dealer is the best bet to diagnose this, it could by any of the dozen or so modules causing this problem or any of the wiring.

Why is my Radio not working on my 2001 Silverado?
I had the exact same issue with my 2001 Silverado 2500HD. Driving down the highway one night and my radio shuts off and instrument cluster malfunctions.
How did I get the radio back in my Silverado Sierra?
Took instrument cluster out and since it was easy took the radio out. Cleaned all connections checked all wires put dielectric grease on everything plugged it back in and everything worked. It’s been two days and so far so good. Well I spoke to soon. Quit working again.
