When did Caterpillar start using the cat 3116 engine?
Our fleet starting getting Cat 3116 diesel engines in the mid 1990s and we ended up with 13 in total. Caterpillar delivered a lot of these diesel engines during the late eighties and mid nineties.

the 3116 does not have an injector pump.just a governor/fuel pump.the injectors themselves are opened/closed by the camshaft. That must be why you have to adjust the fuel rate from under the valve cover, in the rack. yup and many special tools are needed to do it. I got a 3 & a 10 pound hammer, and vice grips!

What do you need to set Cat 3116 valves?
I won’t get into the rebuilding details but I want to stress that it’s very important to keep the valves adjusted properly so nothing like the above happens unexpectedly. The tools for just the valve setting alone are basic…all you need is a metric combination wrench, screwdriver and .015 and .025 feeler gauges.
Is it possible to turn up a 3116 cat?
Its not hard, but i really dont recommend it. Its not meant for a high hp application. we have a bunch of topkicks with 3116/3126/c7’s in them at 270-300 hp, and they fall apart like wet kleenex. We usually get between 150K and 200K miles out of an engine before catastrophic failure.
