Where is a water pump located?
The pump is mounted on the front of the engine and is driven by a belt which also drives the alternator. Water pumps wear out through age, through lack of lubrication on older types — which need greasing — or because the drive belt is too tight.
Can you drive a car if the water pump is out?

When to know if your water pump is failing?
When you start to hear the squeek, you will only have a few days to fix the problem or risk being stranded. Or the water pump may start to leak fluid from the weep hole at the bottom of the pump. This is a sign that the internal seal is failing. When this sign shows up, get the car fixed quickly because it will continue to get worse.
