Both my mk1 & mk4 20vt’s make this noise (a grateing sound on start) – as far as i know its clutch dust getting in the starter motor (common on this engine although I may be wrong) and does not necessarily mean its on its way out. VW will change parts whether they need to be or not so my advice is get a trusted independant to check it.

Click to expand… Dude, the 109 is for the ecu, it does not stop a tdi from cranking. It’s not the main power for the car, classic symptom of a bad 109 is the glow plug light not coming on like normal but the engine will crank just the same.
