Can I run synthetic oil in my Duramax?
2017 Duramax 6.6 Oil Type You need 10 quarts of Duramax 15W-40 or 5W-40 oil to perform the change. Manufacturers recommend the Amsoil 15W-40 or 5W-40 graded oils for the best outcomes. Although, you could use the Shell Rotella, Royal Purple, Mobil Delvac synthetic, etc as well.

I asked what oil they use and they said semi synthetic made by Conoco Phillips. This sounds similar to Rotella which I have been told stinks.

Which is the best oil for 6.6 Duramax?
Mobil1, AMSOIL and Schaeffers are all very good synthetics and use only group 4 or 5 chemical base stocks to make their products from. I personally would stay away from a blend of dyno and synthetic. It is still going to break down like dyno does. Also go with a good filter from Mobil1 or AMSOIL.
