What does it mean Exhaust Fluid quality poor?
A dealer may encounter a customer concern of an Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor message displayed on the DIC. The dealer may or may not find DTCs stored. The Exhaust Fluid Quality Poor DIC message notifies the customer that the ECM has detected a drop in the SCR NOx reduction efficiency.
Is it ok to drive without DEF fluid?
If you decide to ignore it, at the point where you run out of DEF, the light will glow solid red. It gets worse. If you ignore the solid red, your vehicle speed will be reduced to a snail’s pace – 5 miles per hour – until you top up the DEF tank. The DEF warning light can also indicate contaminated fuel.

Few days ago, my Service Exhaust Fluid System message came on and not long after CEL with P20b9 code (Reduction heater a cap or somewhere along those lines). Cleared the code and drove with just the Service EFS message on with hope it might just clear itself.

I custom ordered a $64,000 2011 Chevy 3500 HD crew cab LTZ loaded with a Duramax. When I ordered it in December of 2010 there was no mention of a DEF system-none at all. Had I been informed of the DEF being included, I would have gone to another brand.

Service department runs test and installs a Reservoir Kit ($212.65) in the def tank and tests and clears all codes. Part&Labor= $451.36. Im happy, I pay and Im on my way thinking simple fix, not 10 miles down the road the Service Exhaust fluid system messages is back on.
