What causes a hard start when the engine is warm?

Leaking fuel injectors cause fuel to leak into the combustion chamber. That often doesn’t cause problems on a cold start because most of that fuel has evaporated between the last shut down and the cold start. But leaking fuel can cause an extended crank and hard start when hot and then a rough idle for a while when the engine is warm.

What causes a car to have a rough idle when warm?

A vacuum leak is really air entering the engine that hasn’t been noticed by the computer, so the computer commands the proper air/fuel mixture but the leak causes that mixture to become too lean. You wind up with a lean misfire that causes a rough idle when warm.

When does a truck stall when it gets warm?

This is what it means when the car engine hesitates.

What to do if your engine dies when you release the gas?

If the engine runs fine when you are holding the accelerator pedal down and dies when you release it then you may have a couple of possible issues. I would first check the vacuum hoses going to the engine. If any of them are loose or leaking, this will occur. If they are fine then the throttle body should be cleaned.

When do I let off the gas, the car jerks?

I have noticed that the car will start to jerk/pull when I let off the gas pedal. It is only noticeable at speeds of 45 mph or higher. It doesn’t happen when I accelerate or decelerate, only when I take my foot off the gas to coast. I don’t hear any unusual noises, the car sounds fine.

Why does my car hesitate when I press the gas?

So when the stoplight turns from red to green, you punch the gas pedal, hoping to sail through the intersection a little, um, faster than usual. But instead of moving when you hit the gas pedal, your car hesitates. Juuust long enough for every car behind you to honk, flip you the bird, or angrily swerve around you.

Many people have also complained to have experienced engine sputtering issues when driving the car, especially when they suddenly press down on the accelerator pedal of the vehicle to move at a higher speed.

If your outboard engine is sputtering at any speed, idle or full throttle, it could be the result of several common malfunctions. You may need to make a few timing adjustments or replace a spark plug, or you may need serious mechanical inquiry. Check While Running.

If your marine engine is sputtering, use a timing light to check each spark plug wire individually, while the engine is operating, for the proper voltage output and ignition spark (your individual model’s manual will have these readings). This could indicate which plugs and corresponding fuel cylinders are giving you problems.

What to do if your riding lawn mower is sputtering?

Replace it if it’s brittle and stiff. Might just clean the top of the tank out while you’ve got the carb off. Sometimes dirt, water, grit, will get in that area. Hope this helps. Check the tank , lines for dry cracks. Check carb mount bolts for looseness and the manifold to .

Is the kitchen faucet spitting and sputtering?

I had the drain faucet leaking drip by drip for a bit when I first started the water but it has since stopped. The kitchen faucet does not seem to spit and sputter, the laundry tub and outside sill faucets do. It only seems to do it just at the start and then clears up.

Why is my water pump spitting and sputtering?

Any leaks there would show up as water leaking out. I doubt the pressure tank is the cause of this issue. If the bladder failed you would still get only water out but the pump would be cycling quickly on and off as you used water. Last edited by jdevlin; 05/12/15 02:02 AM .

What causes a Harley Davidson engine to sputter?

That too, from sitting a lot water can condense inside the carb especially if you live in a humid area….the float bowl could be poluted with water buildup….that messes up everything when it comes to running smooth… Thanks Badinfluence… Thanks for the indepth info and it was actually the crank position sensor…go figure.

What causes my bike to lose power / sputter while?

Pull out the plugs give them a clean and put them back in, run a couple of tanks with injector cleaner and see how you go. It FEELS like a fuel issue, like it’s intermittently not getting gas so it wants to stall. Thanks for the tips I’ll try it out and keep you posted.

Why does my Harley hesitate when I start up?

One of those details might point right at a cause. – It starts just a little like it’s not warmed up right away but after it’s warm it gets bad. -If it starts to hesitate I accelerate and it goes away immediately till I let off and start cruising again.

When do I feel hesitation on my Harley Davidson?

-I felt the hesitation every once in awhile about two weeks ago but not as bad till my 93 mile ride yesterday where it was VERY noticeable. – I can cruise for awhile and it shows up and then all of a sudden go away, then show up again. It feels as if it’s not getting gas sprayed into the cylinders and it’s hesitating.

Why does my Softail Deluxe bike run weird?

Mine would do the exact same thing, its a 2007 softail deluxe. It turned out the battery to be the problem. The reason its intermittent is the bike will start running weird in other words it would take a charge but if for some reason that charge did not hold for long the bike will start running weird again.

Why does a dirty fuel filter slow down a car?

Dirty fuel injectors The fuel injectors play the role of spraying fuel into the combustion chambers. This is then mixed with air and ignited by the spark plugs. When the fuel filter is dirty, then you have less fuel going to the combustion chambers. This will cause your car to experience slow acceleration.

Why does my Nissan Altima stop while driving?

I ended up taking it to the dealership. its the crankshaft sensor. I started doing a little research and it seems that a lot of people are having issues with this sensor. Its even caused some cars to just stop while driving. The sad part is that most of the stories i read resulted in having to keep taking the car back to the shop for the same part.

What causes a Nissan Altima engine to jerk and backfire?

Be sure to check all vacuum hoses and especially the hose between the throttle body and the air breather compartment for cracks and small holes,,,Any type of outside air getting in will also cause the engine to jerk and backfire.. 9 people found this helpful. What kind of car jerks and sputters while driving?

My 2003 Altima is doing the same thing but with a twist. For the first 10 minutes when I drive it jerks and sputters then my ABS TCS and Slip lights come in my dash and it runs smooth right afterwards. Any ideas people 13 people found this helpful.

Why does my Infiniti QX60 shudder at low speed?

Same issue many others noted, which is the transmission jerking at low speed and over-revving/jolting on acceleration from a stop. When trying to coast at low speed in traffic the car shudders so badly I have to just stop. Seems especially pronounced as the vehicle transitions from e-drive to the gas engine.

Are there any problems with the Infiniti QX60?

Infiniti QX60 owners have reported 12 problems related to vehicle shudder (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Infiniti QX60 based on all problems reported for the QX60.

What are the problems with the 2014 Infiniti QX60?

See all problems of the 2014 Infiniti QX60 . We are experiencing shifting delays and grinding when accelerating. The car is shaking at aroun 30/40 mph speed and we hear whistling sound coming from under the hood when driving. When the car is running but stationary no noise is heard.

Why is my car sputtering when I accelerate?

The car is sputtering on acceleration when the pedal is first pushed and then hesitant as it builds up speed. Once the driving speed is reached the car runs perfectly until I try to accelerate again. I hooked up my code scanner and there is no code being shown however, the check engine light flashed on last night while driving home.

Why is my engine sputtering at 1250 rpm?

It is not doing this all the time as it has only done it to me yesterday and today a couple of time and not at ever time I was accelerating. It seems to be happening at around 1250 RPMs. From some other posts I have read could this likely be the EGR valve? Any help would be great, Thanks. Does it clear up as you get into higher RPM?

Why is my VGT sputtering at higher RPMs?

If you run an oilled filter like a K&N, that could be the problem. He cleaned the MAF and the truck ran perfect again. This does clear up when it finally comes out of the lag and gets to higher RPMs. Once going I got on it and there was no problems. Could this be early signs of sticking vanes on the VGT? Is it up to full operating temp?

How to fix car that wont start and randomly dies while driving?

Car wont start and randomly dies while driving. How to fix a car that wont start. How to fix car that wont crank. How to fix car that dies while driving. There’s many reasons why a car could die on the road such as: out of gasoline, fuel pump fuse, fan belt broke, radiator out of coolant, and low engine oil.

What causes a car to start but not keep running?

The engine requires the right amount of air and fuel to mix together for ignition. If there is a fuel leak somewhere, then the correct amount of fuel may not make it to the combustion chamber. This might be enough to allow the engine to start, but not keep running.

Why does my Car start then sputter and dies?

These are small common reasons for an engine to sputter and stall. Sometimes your car starts then sputter and dies even while driving. But, an engine is a component with numbers of small parts and sensors. Any part of the machine which affects its function can cause your engine to stall.

Damaged fuel injector in the diesel engine causes similar issues. Improper air supply for the air-fuel mixture can cause improper combustion, which results in an engine stall. Sometimes your car starts but then dies immediately. In this case, the air in the air-fuel mixture could be either more or less, but it depends.

Why does my car stall when I Turn on the engine?

The camshaft opens up the inlet and exhaust vents in the engine, and the cam position sensor controls it. If there is a defective camshaft or a faulty cam position sensor, then it disturbs the opening of ports which in turn affects the function. This can cause your engine to stall.

What should you do if your car stops running?

If your fuel gauge shows you have sufficient fuel and your car still stops running, you should go get it checked by a mechanic. An alternator is responsible for managing the supply of electricity in your vehicle. If your car suddenly stops running, it is possible that the alternator has gone bad.

When you own a car, it is your responsibility to care for it. Many car owners seem to think a car runs on magic dust. You have to continually check oil, gas, coolant, etc., to make sure your car stays fit for a long time. Having basic knowledge about your car can help you counter a mechanical problem like your car shutting off while driving.

What happens when you go over 4000 rpm?

The engine computer has a built in rev limiter built in to the programming that will not let the engine go above 3800 to 4000 rpms when the transmission is not in gear and driving down the street. This is a normal protection so you do not over rev the engine and damage it. Was this answer helpful? Thank you for your feedback! Sorry about that.

What to do if your Honda wont go over 3000 rpm?

The pressure usually decreases over time in the lines but wear safety glasses just the same, I would recomend depressurizing the fuel system first, buy a Haynes repair manual for detailed procedure to be safe.

Why does my car sputter at 2K rpm?

At 2k sputters bad. In drive won’t go over 30mph & if rpms get to 2k sputters loses power badly. Replaced, IAC,tps, plugs, wires, throttle body, catalytic converter, ignition module, coil packs, fuel pump, filter. It’s like it’s in limp mode. Any help will be appreciated. My car has 140230 miles. Why does my car bog at 3000 rpm?

I revved it past 3000 rpms while in neutral and it seemed to work fine (though I hadn’t tried revving in neutral before). Then I took it for a drive and it bogged again at 3000rpm. Tried it in neutral again when I got back home and it worked fine. So it must have something to do with being under a load.

What does it mean when your car won’t go over 2K?

Why is the fuel gauge full in my car?

However, if your fuel gauge is full it could be a symptom of further engine problems. A blocked fuel injector can prevent fuel from reaching the combustion chambers. If the problem is not corrected immediately, it can lead to further engine damage. 1. Faulty spark plugs 2. Dirty fuel injectors 3. Vacuum leak 4. Dirty mass airflow sensor 5.

Why is my car sputtering and losing power?

Dirty, old, worn out, clogged filters are a common cause of car sputtering and losing power. Air Filter: A dirty air filter, especially one that hasn’t been changed in a long time, is like a stranglehold on the engine.

Why is my car chugging and losing power?

For instance, if your converter is clogged, it will restrict exhaust flow, whereas a cracked one will leak. This can cause dangerous gases to backup and choke the engine, leading to reduction in power, acceleration, and fuel economy, as well as engine chugging, sputtering, and stalling.

But if there is a fuel leak somewhere, then the proper amount of fuel won’t be able to make it to the combustion chamber. This might cause the engine to still start, but it won’t be able to keep it running. That is why it will die almost immediately after it starts.

Why did my car stall at stop lights?

So, my wife came home from running some errands and told me the check-engine light was on and that the car was sputtering and felt like it was going to stall while stopped at stop lights. I went to check it out, maybe 5 minutes later, and I took it for a drive… everything seemed fine. The next day it happened to me.

What causes the Check Engine light to go on?

A dirty throttle body may not trigger the check engine light. So, if your stalling happens when coming to a stop, and the check engine light is on, it may be worth taking a look at it. All modern torque converters “lock”. What this locking does is provide a true mechanical connection from the engine to the wheels.

Why does the Check Engine light come on?

When the Check Engine Light comes on, that means that Trouble Codes, likely identifying the causes of the issue you are having, have been stored in your car’s computer. The fastest way to resolve this is to have a Check Engine Light Diagnostic performed to obtain those Codes and start to track down the possibilities.

What to do when your check engine light goes off?

The fastest way to resolve this is to have a Check Engine Light Diagnostic performed to obtain those Codes and start to track down the possibilities. Such a Diagnostic can be done by a certified Mechanic from YourMechanic on a mobile basis. The Codes are downloadable using a scanner and they should indicate at least the general area of the fault.

Typically, when the Check Engine Light is illuminated and it is flashing, this is an indication that the vehicle’s engine is misfiring. This would also explain the symptoms on your 2007 Lincoln MKZ.

What to do when your engine is sputtering and losing power?

Be sure to check the rubber boot connectors for the vacuum where it connects to fuel pressure regulator and at throttle body and trans. Mine were all cracked and leaking and not obvious. All of the damage was on the bottom out of sight. I moved them and there it was. Replaced them and problem solved.

Why does my car stutter on the freeway?

While traveling home on the freeway at 65mph the engine began to stutter, especially when trying to go up any type of grade. I slowed down to 50mph before the “stutter” went away. I had a similar problem while traveling in Florida.

Why do I hear a bang when my engine backfires?

First and the most common way is when the engine is running a small explosion of un-burnt fuel is ignited inside of the intake manifold creating a loud bang which is the backfire sound you hear. This explosion can bend the throttle actuator plate, push intake gaskets outward creating a vacuum leak and even blown apart a plastic intake manifold.

What to do when your car engine is backfiring?

Anytime you have an engine that is backfiring the first thing to look for is a check engine light. If no warning lights are on continue down this guide. If the check engine or service engine soon light in on scan the computer for trouble codes. This will help locate the system that is having a problem and needs repair.

Why does my Emissions Light keep coming on?

It is one component that holds the capability to power car components, calling the need for installing, many of them. One should know that as the vacuum is a rubber component, it may develop cracks or even get disconnected. This can be another reason that the emission control system warning light lights up.

Can a bad sensor cause an engine to backfire?

An engine sensor malfunction can also lead to backfires. Take for example a bad mass air flow (MAF) sensor. The engine computer uses this and other sensors to compute the amount of fuel to inject into the engine according to operating conditions.

What happens if you put a cup of water in your car?

Subsequently, the compression and combustion of fuel, which is vital for a running car engine, goes for a complete toss. Such a situation is known as hydrostatic lock, where the engine refuses to start. Be it a small cup of water, or a liter, it can cause engine problems and eventually, engine stalling.

What are the symptoms of water in the gas tank?

Only when the tank is almost empty, the vehicle pulls in the water from the bottom to the engine. Eventually, the tank begins to rust. ● Unexplained and sudden increase or decrease in speed while driving. ● The vehicle starts to splutter when the gas pedal is pressed.

What causes a car to stumble when applying the gas?

Due to these facts, problems with the fuel pump can cause the engine to not run or to stumble as the gas pedal is applied. Typically hesitation or stumbling issues are caused by an obstruction in the fuel pump or a pump that is starting to show signs of breaking or wearing out.

Can a loose fuel filter cause a car to stumble?

In some cases, the connections on the fuel filter may be loose, causing fuel to leak from the fuel lines or the fuel filter. This can cause engine stumbling issues. If you notice this problem, replace the fuel filter with a new one and retighten the fittings.

The most common causes of the issue you are having is faulty spark plugs and faulty ignition coils. If a spark plug is the cause of your misfire, it is recommended that all the spark plugs be replaced at once for best maintenance practices.

Why is my gas cart spitting and sputtering?

Lastly, your spitting and sputtering problems may be because of a messed up catalytic converter. If your catalytic converter is on the fritz, your cart won’t be able to process the waste that comes out of your carts exhaust system which causes spitting and sputtering. What’s causing gas to spit from your carts valve cover?

What causes a golf cart engine to sputter and blow smoke?

Check if your siphon tube needs to be blown out or just straight up replaced. A sputtering engine may also be a sign that you need to replace your fuel filter. Lastly, it might be that your carburetor is too dirty. If your carburetor is dirty, your cart engine will sputter.

What kind of car jerks when you let off the gas pedal?

I recently bought a used 2007 Saturn Ion with 66k miles on it. The dealer that I bought it from said that it was pre inspected and all fluids were changed. I have noticed that the car will start to jerk/pull when I let off the gas pedal. It is only noticeable at speeds of 45 mph or higher.

Instead of going faster by stepping on the accelerator pedal, the speed will be reduced. The vehicle may even stumble entirely during these seconds. This is what it means when the car engine hesitates. It is usually the result of a problem with the air and fuel mixture within the combustion chamber.

Is there check engine light for intermittent stalling?

Many times, there will be no check engine light and no fault codes to give you a clue as to what might be causing the engine to stall. So the trick to diagnosing an intermittent stalling problem is to catch the vehicle when it’s acting up — and that rarely happens when you have the vehicle in your shop.

Can a stalling engine be intermittent driveability?

Intermittent driveability problems of any kind are always a challenge to diagnose. When a customer brings you a vehicle and complains of a stalling problem, you may not have much to go on other than their description of what’s happening and when it happens.

What to do if your car shuts off when you slow down?

There’s not always a warning light to alert you of this, but sometimes your car will be driving fine at road speed, only to die when you slow down and stop. If your engine shuts off at low speed, contact a mechanic immediately for a thorough inspection.

When do I slow down, engine shuts off inspection?

received a When I slow down and stop the car, engine shuts off Inspection. Your car is designed to run like a well-oiled machine, but sometimes that machine struggles in unexpected places. There’s not always a warning light to alert you of this, but sometimes your car will be driving fine at road speed, only to die when you slow down and stop.

Repair or replace any hoses which are causing the leak. If any of the components in your fuel system stop working correctly, like your fuel injectors, fuel pump, or fuel pressure regulator, then your engine won’t get the proper amount of fuel it needs for combustion. This will cause your engine to lag, stumble, or hesitate.

What to do when your car hesitates when accelerating?

It will literally smother the engine, hurting fuel economy and acceleration. Fortunately, this is the easiest one to fix — just take the old air filter out of the air box, inspect it and drop a new one in if necessary. 2. Mass airflow sensor This is the next part to look at if you’ve ruled out the air filter.

What to do if your car loses all power?

Start by checking your ground wires, they run from the battery to the frame, and the engine. look for corrosion in the wires, and at terminal points. Make sure terminal points are not loose. Then also check the positive line to the starter and to the fuse/relay box. again looking for corrosion and loose connections.

What causes a car to lose power at the spark plug?

This is a wasted combustion cycle where no power is generated. Ignition coils and spark plug wires convert the low voltage power from the battery into the high voltage necessary to jump the spark plug gap. As ignition coils and wires wear, they may lose insulation and short out.

What should I do if my car sputters when starting?

Fuel that is. The next time the vehicle sits, instead of immediately starting the engine, turn the ignition switch to the run position so the dash lights come on for two seconds and then turn the ignition switch off. Repeat this a half dozen times and then try starting the engine.

Can a radiator cause a car not to start?

Generally a radiator is not going to cause a car not to start – it is only a heat exchanger for the engine coolant. I think your problem would be more drivability in the fuel (fuel pump injectors fuel lines)…

What happens if you have a bad solenoid or starter?

Solenoid or Starter. If the problem is a bad alternator, your car will slowly lose power. You’ll be driving down the road, your lights will dim, and you’ll lose power and die. If the problem is with your battery, then you’ll generally only have trouble starting your car since that’s the battery’s main function.

What happens when the spark plugs fail in a car?

After the ignition coil sends an electrical signal to the spark plugs, they transmit that signal to the combustion chamber so that its air & fuel mixture can be ignited by an electric spark. If the spark plugs were to ever fail, then the engine’s performance would diminish and eventually fail altogether.

Mower starts right up, give it full throttle and engage blades mows less than a minute then starts to sputter and dies. It will start right back up and do the same thing again. Changed fuel filter, checked gas cap vent, spark plug cleaned and gaped.

What causes car engine to hesitate when accelerating?

The exhaust gas recirculation valve, or EGR valve, may be damaged and causing a leak. This is known to cause engine hesitation problems, so it should be addressed. If you are using bad fuel which is has been sitting in your tank for too long or is too low of an octane for your engine, it can cause many different problems.

Why does my car lag when I accelerate?

If any of the components in your fuel system stop working correctly, like your fuel injectors, fuel pump, or fuel pressure regulator, then your engine won’t get the proper amount of fuel it needs for combustion. This will cause your engine to lag, stumble, or hesitate.

What causes a car to sputter when accelerating?

A car sputters when accelerating due to the fact air and fuel is not being properly mixed, therefore, forcing the car to run on unburned fuel. Another reason could be a weak transmission system that misfires when the engine experiences an extra load.
