Why does the engine light go on when DEF is low?

I am thinking there is something wrong with one of the DEF sensor in the tank or somewhere else but want to check with you guys if it make sense to you or not if the engine light goes on when DEF is very low and you can’t access the exhaust menu in the dashboard? Thank you for your help.
