Are there transmission problems in a 2002 Ford Ranger?
Have a 2002 Ranger with a 3.0 liter V6. At about 34,000 miles the auto transmission had displayed some strange shifting problems. On the freeway, the shifts did not seem correct, and when starting out in the morning I could put it in drive and press on the gas and the engine just rev’ed and no gear.

After that incident took it home and parked it. Did some research and the 5R55E transmissions that came with my truck (Not sure which trans you have) has a known problem with one of the pistons that helps direct fluid wearing out and causing pressure loss which means no reverse and poor shifting between 1st and 2nd.

Don’t assume because the trans is not slipping in 1st gear at a dead stop the transmission is trouble-free. Also consider that the transmission could have been abused by the previous owner who then changed the fluid in a forlorn hope that fresh fluid would cure the problem. Check you trans fluid could be low I hate to say but mine did something similar here recently and I had to replace the valve body not sure on what transmission you have but the 5r55e’s have a fairly known problem with one of the valves in the transmission going bad. Causing problems with shifting.
