How can I tell if my throttle body is bad?

How can I tell if my throttle body is bad?

Here are the most common signs a failing throttle body we’ve seen in our shop:

  1. Grime buildup. Dirt and grime can build up inside the part’s housing (some mechanics call this “coking”) causing an interruption in air-fuel flow.
  2. Electrical problems.
  3. Airflow disruptions.
  4. Poor or high idle.
  5. The ominous check engine light.

What happens if there is too much slack in a throttle cable?

This can also result in the opposite effect as well, in that the excess slack can create a delayed throttle return response. This can cause more throttle to be applied unintentionally, creating a dangerous situation.

What causes the throttle response to be delayed?

Improper cable adjustment and slow acceleration response When there is excess slack or the cable is too tight, this can cause intermittent delays in throttle response relative to pressing down on the accelerator pedal. This can also result in the opposite effect as well, in that the excess slack can create a delayed throttle return response.

Why does my throttle control cable keep sticking?

When the cable is dirty, many of the same effects of too much slack (noted above) can also be experienced due to the cable occasionally sticking in certain positions.

How is the throttle cable connected to the accelerator pedal?

Connected to a spring loaded linkage on the side of your engine’s throttle body on one end and connected ultimately to your accelerator pedal on the other end, this simple component can create havoc when not functioning correctly.

This can also result in the opposite effect as well, in that the excess slack can create a delayed throttle return response. This can cause more throttle to be applied unintentionally, creating a dangerous situation.

Where do you adjust the throttle cable on a motorcycle?

If the free play is out of spec there are two places that the cable slack can be adjusted. There are usually inline barrel adjusters (sometimes one on both the opening and closing cable, but often only on the opening cable) and adjusters down at the carbs or throttle bodies.
