Can you paint the gas tank on a motorcycle?

A great way to do this is by painting your bike, and one of the most prominent parts is the gas tank. Some people just go to a paint shop and let someone else do it, but I prefer doing it myself. Not only by the fact that it’s a lot cheaper; when your ride is ready it will remind you every time you’ve painted it yourself.

How long does it take to paint a gas tank?

Let this first layer dry for about 30 minutes (please be sure to follow the instructions on the can) and then repeat this process for every layer. After your last layer: let it dry for a 1 or 2 days (the longer, the better). When your primer coats have dried for at least 1 day, it’s time to bring some color on your gas tank!

Do you need to sand a gas tank?

If your gas tank is in a pretty good shape you also can choose to sand it down to it’s original primer. In this case you can forget about thinner and rough sanding paper (only 400 and up for removing the color layer). Always read and follow the instructions from the products u use, especially with primer, paint and coating!

Painting the outside of the tank is less risky. If you choose to paint the outside, here are the six steps I recommend: Remove the (inivisible) oil coating with acetone or paint thinner. Remember your gloves, eye protection, and mask! Simply apply some thinning agent to a rag and wipe down the surface a few times.

That said, if you decide to paint your stock tank, I heavily discourage owners from painting or sealing the inside of the tank with anything (paint, flex-seal, etc.) since paint just doesn’t hold up well to water.

How to prepare tin for a craft painting project?

Once the second coat of paint has dried, the tin surface is ready for painting or stenciling. Make sure also to seal the completed project once it has dried with two coats of either brush-on FolkArt Artists Varnish or spray FolkArt Clear Acrylic Sealer. Sanding the tin surface before priming and painting will help the paint bond to the surface.

What kind of paint to use on tin?

For best results, use Apple Barrel Gloss, FolkArt Enamels, FolkArt Outdoor, or one of Plaid’s several multi-surface acrylic paints formulas. Reduce brush marks on the tin surface by using a soft-bristle paintbrush and only light pressure.
