the axle breather tubes are there to aloow for pressure changes in the axle when you go down the road the gears heat the oil causing it to expand when they cool off the oil contracts (makes sense right ?)

Why are Diff Breathers important? Extended diff breathers are extremely important insurance for your 4WD if you drive through water. In essence, when you go through a puddle that is near or above diff height, you are dunking a hot differential into cold water.

The need for venting comes from the fact that the gear oil and air in the differential heats up and expands. It also contracts when it cools, which is why I think a check valve is a bad idea. The seals could be leaking because the vacuum in the diff is pulling in grime from outside and wearing them out.
How do you test a diff breather?
one way is to drain fluid with the fill port closed (crack open the fill first just in cast it is suck then close ti again) if the fluid comes out “goes glug glug glug….” as it alternately flows oil out then air back in then the breather still has the OEM evil little flapper or is otherwise plugged, if it pours out …

What problem may be caused if the rear axle breather is blocked?
The breather valve on top of the axle, where fitted, can also become blocked. This causes oil and air to build up inside, which may force oil out of leak-prone places. Overfilling the axle with oil can also raise the pressure enough to cause leaks.
