What kind of noise does a Toyota make when backing up?
It is incredibly loud, especially when parked underground or an enclosed space. Inside the vehicle with the windows up it is not very loud. However, anyone outside in front of the vehicle for a couple hundred feet would know you are backing up. I have startled several people when backing up on battery…and they were 25 – 50 ft in front of me.
Where does the noise come from in reverse?
Reverse in hybrids is electric only. You might as well hear MG in the back doing its job. It does whir some… This is the hybrid forum ! And the noise, as I said, also comes from the front, when in drive. Maybe it is louder in the back ?

What makes the running fan noise in a Toyota?
Yep… the “running fan” noise is the “motor vehicle” detection noise stated in the manual. If the car is in gear, and stopped, the same noise is up front. I thought the radiator fan was running.
