Why does my GM fuel gauge keep twitching?
The stepper motor that controls that gauge has gone bad. GM apparently had quite a number of instrument clusters where one or more gauges either failed or went just plain nuts.

Re: What would cause a fuel gauge to peg way past full? Generally, if your gauge is reading past full and the tank isn’t full, it’s the positive wire that has a connection problem. If it’s reading totally empty, it’s the ground. If your tank if full of gas right now; I’d drive it for a while and see what happens.

Is the fuel gauge too high on my Suburban?
2004 Chevy Suburban (107,000 miles): My tach went out and the dealer installed a new instrument cluster. Since then the fuel gauge has been reading about a 1/4 tank too high.

Gauges that are not working could mean a faulty ignition switch. This has been an issue on this truck series. A bad ignition means that there may not be full voltage available to activate the shift solenoids. Replacing the switch will cure the problem. Figure 1. Look for blown fuses or damaged wiring.
