Why is my GMC Acadia power lift gate not opening?
The rear (power) lift gate will not open. When the button is pushed the latch will open releasing the door but then it pulls back in and does the the same thing over. When you manually open the gate and push the button to close it the latch starts clicking and then just a whining grinding noise.

Why is the rear hatch on my GMC Acadia not opening?
Could be a failure of one of the obstruction detection sensors. Someone with a scan tool and the proper software would likely be able to identify which one is causing the problem. cold weather will make weak lift gate struts– even weaker/slower. It may be cold enough- the strut is weak and the liftgate motor- find the door too heavy- and reverses.

The original post was really helpful. Just ran into the same issue with my 2008 Acadia where the latch stopped working ( the power lift and close hasn’t worked for a year ) and after replacing the power latch, the power lift/ close is working again also! Just a couple updates:

You can now pull the plastic body panel off the inside of the gate. It will require you to pull hard, be careful to disconnect the two electrical harnesses near the latch mechanism before removing the panel completely from the car. Assemble in the opposite order.
