The only real PITA was getting at that locknut and adjuster. The trans cooler lines run right over top of the gearbox so it was not only hard getting the nut loose (constant flipping the open end wrench over and occasionally switching to the closed end box side), but getting the allen wrench in there was a PITA as well. Is there a fix for the loose steering problem?

Yes, the replacement column solved the issue for the OP. But, the column didn’t need full replacement nor should the column be need fully replaced in most trucks. The column components are FULLY serviceable. The main problem is that most people read ISS RATTLE and ASSUME that their problem is the ISS.
