Other than gaining a better look at the engine, there really is no reason to remove those plastic covers. They do not add much weight, since they are made from plastic. So throwing them away doesn’t really help saving weight. These plastic covers do actually serve a function.

They’re called engine appearance covers. They’re called that because they’re just there for appearance. I just live with it. On my Acura, they have covers not only on the engine but the front and both sides of the engine compartment. You have to take the covers off to even check the brake fluid.
