What are the most common problems with VTEC?

What are the most common problems with VTEC?

The most common VTEC issues we see are, in order of frequency: very low engine oil levels that result in starvation under hard accelleration, faulty VTEC oil pressure switches, faulty VTEC oil control solenoids, sludged / clogged oil passages in the VTEC oil control circuit, wiring harness / connector terminal damage, bad PCM.

Is it possible to fix an ECU in a car?

Fixing up most car ECU problems and what to do! Now, getting an ECU or ECM repaired is not a piece of cake because it can’t be fixed just like that in a jiffy. Any attempt to open or mess with an ECU or ECM will end very badly. It houses the software and hard drive that controls all the functions of a car engine.

Why is my VTEC switch not working properly?

Make sure you check your oil level ASAP as some VTEC DTCs are set due to a loss of oil pressure due to low oil levels. The misfire DTC’s can be disregarded until the VTEC system is operating correctly. Well, I took it back to the dealer where I bought it and they told me it was the oil pressure switch.

When do you need to check your ECU?

When the engine performance is compromised; with chances, the ECU or ECM has problems and needs to be checked how bad the problem is! These problems could be the following which can be inconvenient, and prevent the car from starting all together. If an ECU needs checking or replacement will just shut down and the car will just stop.

What to do if your VTEC is not working?

Clearing the DTC, disconnecting the VTEC oil pressure switch and using a jumper wire to short the signal wire to ground and keeping your RPM below 2700 when driving would prevent VTEC from engaging and you could operate your vehicle. This ASSUMES that you actually do have engine oil pressure to keep from grenading your engine.

How does the VTEC work on a Honda Accord?

It accomplishes this by turning a control solenoid ‘ON’ to allow oil pressure into the VTEC control passages to apply pins that will lock the intake rockers. When the oil pressure is present, the pressure switch signal will go high. When the control solenoid is turned ‘OFF’, the oil pressure is dumped and the oil pressure switch signal will go low.

What causes a VTEC control solenoid to go bad?

If your fault is NOT due to a faulty pressure switch, or an electrical circuit fault to or within the PCM, then it is either a bad VTEC control solenoid, sludge clogging the oil circuit OR low oil pressure / oil starvation. Good luck! IT IS ALREADY BROKEN DOWN AGAIN!!! The dealer where you bought it? A non -Honda dealer, right? Click to expand…

Why does my Honda VTEC go into fuel cut mode?

If the pressure switch signal is not logical for the commanded state of the control solenoid, a DTC will set and the PCM will go into a ‘fuel-cut’ mode limiting engine rpm and performance. The PCM simply doesn’t ‘know’ what the state of the intake valves are, so you end up with the symptoms you describe.

What is the code for a VTEC DTC?

The P2647 is a VTEC pressure switch high voltage DTC. It may be as simple as needing to replace the switch (P/N 37250-PNE-G01). The switch is the part indicated as #12.
