What causes long cranking time?

What causes long cranking time?

When an engine cranks for a long time before it starts, either spark or fuel is missing or weak and each has its own reasons. A bad coolant sensor, a bad throttle position sensor (TPS), a bad fuel pump or a plugged fuel filter can all cause a lean condition causing long cranking times.

How long should a diesel crank before starting?

In older diesel engines glow plugs would take anything up to 5 minutes to get the diesel to the desired temperature to start the engine. The modern engines will do this in seconds, so it’s important to wait for the lights to go out unless you know that the engine is at operating temperature.

What would cause a hard start?

Fouled Plugs: Spark plugs create the spark which allows the vehicle to burn fuel. Fouled plugs are one of the most common reasons for a hard starting engine. As electrodes wear down, the voltage required to jump the gap to ignite the fuel increases. This can lead to prolonged cranking before the engine will start.

What causes hard starting on a diesel engine?

Air in the fuel can also be a cause of hard starting or a no start condition. Air can make the engine die after it starts, and make restarting difficult. The injection pump itself is usually not the source of the air leak, so check the fuel lines and pump. A worn or clogged pump can also make an engine hard to start.
