What causes loud high pitched whistling sound?
My bmw is making a very loud high pitch whistling. It sounds like a siren. I took it to a mechanic and he replaced the valve cover but the noise still exists. Please tell me the problem.

When driving 40 mph and above the Element makes a faint whistle noise. The noise is only there when I put my foot on the gas pedal. If I take my foot off the gas and coast it disappears. Sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment.
