What does no start no crank no click mean?

If you have a late model GM vehicle and turn the key only to hear nothing, you’ll most likely think you have a dead battery—and you may. But a no start, no crank, no click condition can be far more involved than that. In the old days, power flowed through the ignition switch and down to the starter solenoid. Not anymore.

How does the ignition switch work on a GM car?

The ignition switch now talks to the body control module (BCM) and it’s the BCM that initiates one of two relays. The second relay, the more important of the two, is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). And it only operates the starter relay after it’s satisfied that the correct key is in the ignition.

How to diagnose no start, turn key and nothing happens?

Spark (Only gas engines need a spark, diesel engines need high compression and glow plugs in cold weather to start) Compression (without compression the engine will not run, or not have any power) To read my article where I really lay out the FastC method of diagnosing any no start condition read here.

Why does the keyswitch not turn the starter?

They keyswitch may not be sending the signal to tell the battery to send juice to the starter, the battery may not be able to send enough power to the solenoid to turn the starter, the solenoid may not be ramping up the power given to it, or the starter may not be functioning and able to turn.

What happens to the engine when you turn the key?

Turning the engine causes the pistons to rise and fall in the engine block, activates fuel and spark, and (hopefully) ignition of the engine so that it begins running on its own without the starter motor turning it.

Can a bad crankshaft sensor cause the engine to stall?

If the crankshaft position sensor or its wiring have any issues, it can cause the crankshaft signal to be cut off while the engine is running, which can cause the engine to stall. This is usually a symptom of a wiring problem, however a bad crankshaft position sensor can also produce this symptom.

What causes a car to have a no start?

The electric fuel pump (located in the fuel tank) is the key component that supplies the fuel the fuel injectors need to inject gasoline into the cylinders. When the fuel pump fails, it will cause a no start condition. Thankfully, the fuel pump can be tested with a fuel pressure gauge to make sure it has really fried. 3.) Engine Mechanical System

Why does my car have a no crank condition?

In order to crank the engine the starter cut-out relay needs to have power to the pull-in coil from the ignition switch and the relay coil needs to be grounded through the clutch switch on a manual trans or the park-neutral safety switch on a automatic.

Initially (when I hadn’t replaced anything yet) out of about 100 crank attempts, around the 80th attempt it randomly started up then died after a few seconds and wouldn’t crank or start again. So I replaced the battery, terminals, cleaned connections, replaced battery ground wire, checked other ground wires, replaced alternator and the starter.

Why does it crank but not start?

In layman’s terms, a No Start Condition means that your vehicle’s starter motor is cranking the engine but the engine is not starting. This condition is usually due a failed fuel pump, a failed ignition coil, a failed ignition control module, a failed crank sensor, etc… that lets the engine crank (turn over) but does not let it start.

What does crank no start mean?

The crank/no start is when the spinning of the engine is heard, but it doesn’t catch for the car to run on its own. The no crank/no start is just that-you don’t hear the car crank (hearing crickets) and the car doesn’t start. With most, it may be a given, but for those who honestly may not know,…

Also a clogged fuel pump or bad fuel pressure regulator could be hindering the fuel supply. The cam position sensor and crank position sensor are in charge of sending the signal to the fuel and ignition to let them know when to work.

It looks as if you have covered most of the bases. However, it is possible that you may have an exposed or faulty ground wire, damaged ignition relay or starter relay. It is also possible although unlikely, that something in the timing system is causing the timing to be too far retarded, which can cause starting issues you’ve described.

We have tested voltage at the starter relay and there is power used a jump wire at the starter relay and it cranks over but will not start. Tested the starter solenoid with a test light at the low voltage prong and when turn the key is turned over test light does not illuminate.

What happens when you discontinue power to the starter?

When you start the engine and release the key the circuit will, discontinue the power to the starting motor. If this stays on after the engine has started, the main contacts in the solenoid, have most likely failed. This will ultimately cause serious damage, to the whole starting system and the transmission flywheel.

When this occurs, it means the starter is not engaging with the flywheel. This is a worrying situation, which could result in having to replace the whole component. If you try to start your engine and the engine doesn’t start instantly, you may have to try again.

A different battery will solve that until it runs down too. In your third sentence, unless the new battery was also discharged, you likely have a loose or dirty battery cable connection. You can verify that by turning on the head lights and watching their brightness.
