I would run thicker oil before i ran with a number that low. spoke with the GMC dealer. I am going to replace the sending unit and see if that give me a solution.

Sounds like the oil pump or the O ring off the pick up tube is busted. Its a simple repair but if you dont get the front cover bolted up properly it will leak. OP, I believe those ratings that you read are “minimum” service ratings.
Which is better GM 5.3L or 6.2L V8?
After owning the 6.2L for a year I am very impressed. My best mileage (based on the last 50 miles) on the 5.3 was 23.4 mpg but on the 6.2L it is 26.1 mpg. I would say that overall I am getting around 2 mpg better than my 2014 5.3L.
