Could be low oil pressure and cause the timing valve to work incorrectly or the tensioner could be damaged also they both make rattle and also if pressure is low the lifters can cause rattle sounds. You could have the oil pump clogged. You need to check those to continue.

This should be a recall. Plain and simple. VW had a good coil pack design from 98 through 01. Then they went with a different supplier to save a few bucks. Now 1.8Ts are blowing coil packs left and right. VW saw this, and went back to the original (or yet another) supplier. it took VW two years to track it down, acknowlidge the problem and fix it!
