Using gear oil in such a transmission would damage the transmission. Don’t do that. Engines use motor oil, not gear oil. The engine will run for a time on gear oil, but because gear oil is not the proper lubricant for an engine, you will destroy the engine using gear oil.

The spot where I noticed the fresh oil look was the small O-ring seal on the top outside edge where it meets with the upper housing, the shift shaft seal has what looks like a seepage over time (not fresh leak). Thing is, this guy brought a new prop in also, and he claims it is hard shifting too.
