They would move the rocker arm up and down and if it didn’t feel right to them, then it got the feeler gauge. After doing adjustments for years, most of these guys know when it’s right and when it’s not. As for the burned valve, that’s what happens when all the clearance goes away. The valve cannot close completely which helps keep it cool.

What happens if you don’t adjust the intake valve?
It’s not like your engine will die, if you don’t adjust the valves. The intake valves do tend to loosen over time, and the exhaust valves tighten. If your intake valves are loose, the engine will sound quieter after the valves are adjusted.
Can you change the valve cover on a Honda Accord?
IM, tb and then you can access the valve cover and replace the spark plug seals and spark plugs. Then after your done drop in a new valve cover gasket. I like to do things once and do it right. I dont wana go back to take crap apart.
