Is the cat 3406 engine a good engine?
Usually about 800 bucks used to be done every 300K to 350K on the “B” series engines, not required on the “E” series like I have, unless oil analysis says to do it. Don’t worry. It is a great engine.

When did the 3406E engine start leaking oil?
The 3406E started having engines leak oil at the front structures after they had 750,000 miles on them. By a 1.3 million they need to be rebuilt to stop the oil from running out of them. There were also some gear changes under the front cover to help longevity on the C-15/C-16.
Is the C-16 7CZ the same as the 3406E?
The 3406E 5DS and 1MM, along with the C-16 7CZ are identical in internal parts. The 1MM 15.8L 3406E and 2WS 14.8L 3406E went to the newer electronics know as ADEM II or 70 pin ECM. Otherwise they are basically the same engine as the earlier 40 pin 1LW 14.8L and 5DS 15.8L engines
Do you have to have a cat gauge on a 3406E?
The 3406E and C15 up to the ACERT do not have adjustable bridges. You set the valve lash in the same sequence as any other 3406….although you have to have a Cat gauge to set the injector height. Also, a good rule of thumb is every year or 100K miles on the overhead.
How to adjust the overhead settings on a 3406E?
Recheck each adjustment. Remove the top center bolt, and turn the flywheel by 360 degrees in the direction of the engine’s rotation. This will position the No. 6 piston at the top center on the compression stroke. Install the top center bolt in the flywheel. Make an adjustment to the valve lash on the inlet valves 3, 5, and 6.
When did cat 3406 go to electronically controlled pump?
The 3406A & B were both running on a Mechanical F. Injection Pump, But the 3406C went to an Electronically Controlled pump about 1990 or 1991 – Correct ? ? Also, Are there Any shops left that can Rebuild/ Overhaul the old Mechanical Pump ?
