Why does my HVAC system make a howling noise?

I have a residential gas boiler heating system that is not just whining, it’s howling. It actually sounds like there are three or more howls going on at the same time and the noise is even throughout the house. The circulation pump appears to be running fine and the heat exchange is not cracked/broken. Any suggestions?

What should I do if I hear a howling noise in my boiler?

Start right at the boiler: if the noise is at or in the boiler I’d shut if off immediately as it may be unsafe. If the nose is coming from piping check for a failing circulator pump motor. At HOWLING NOISES in BUILDINGS we include additional examples of howling sounds traced to heating or cooling equipment. Thanks DJF, here is an update.

Why does my car make a whining noise?

It’s music to every driver’s ears, like a stirring symphony of harmonized audio frequencies all singing in perfect unison. It’s the sound of automotive health. And then there are other noises that are decidedly unpleasant and unnerving to hear. For instance, when a transmission is making a whining noise.

What kind of noises do you hear when shifting gears?

Clunking, buzzing, growling, grinding, or humming sounds and vibrations coming from your transmission are not good signs. Far from a finely tuned mechanical musical instrument, if you hear these types of noises under your hood when your car is shifting gears, you need a certified, experienced technician to inspect your transmission.
