Why does my VW Golf make a strange noise when I start?
Both my mk1 & mk4 20vt’s make this noise (a grateing sound on start) – as far as i know its clutch dust getting in the starter motor (common on this engine although I may be wrong) and does not necessarily mean its on its way out. VW will change parts whether they need to be or not so my advice is get a trusted independant to check it.

Why does my car rattle on a cold start?
When from a cold start I get this annoying startup rattle for 1-2 seconds then it’s gone. Engine is very quiet after this initial rattle. Car drives fine etc. As I am aware this is a widespread problem but nobody has a definitive answer to solve this.

On my MK6 the first cold start is louder as the air pump cycles on and off loudly. Its much louder with an aftermarket intake that is less insulated than the OEM airbox. I get like a whining noise for a couple of seconds when cold and yes when I first heard it I was concerned but it’s become normal to me and I take no notice of it now.
