Currently, when a homeless application is made the council can make an offer to help set the applicant up with a private letting, sometimes assisting with the deposit or rent in advance. So the homeless household has a certain amount of choice and control if they accept the homelessness prevention offer.
Why was choice based lettings introduced?
The Communities and Local Government Department introduced the Choice-based Letting (CBL) scheme in 2001 as a pilot programme. The programme was intended to offer ‘choice’ and make more ‘transparent’ the letting procedure to the consumer.
