What happens if you over fill the DEF tank?
The main reason not to overfill is because def fluid will freeze as it is mostly water. If the tank is overfull and freezes it could crack and leak. I usually recommend waiting until the first message comes on and then adding 3.5 gallons or so.
How do I know when my DEF tank is full?
At 5%, the light starts flashing, and when levels drop below 2.5%, it turns solid. When DEF runs out entirely, the light turns red, and the truck is electronically limited from going more than five mph. DEF levels can also be checked manually.
