I did a bit of looking into this, and according to GM, the P1638 sets if the PCM is not getting the correct signal for the alternator load, and they suggest checking the connections at the alternator and at the PCM.

As soon as the temp seems to drop below 50 outside the problem seems to minimize and even go away for quite awhile. THE VOLTAGE is good. 14volts plus all the time. The volt gauge don’t even flicker when the battery light comes on. I’ve checked with a volt meter and all the grounds for the engine are good.

AllOffTopic.com FTW! It’s not security. Security issue would make it crank fine, fire up, and then stall immediately. I’d check the park interlock, that will prevent it from cranking in the first place. Check the park interlock as in it’s out of adjustment or what?
