What RAW format does Nikon use?
NEF
Exclusive to Nikon cameras, the NEF is Nikon’s RAW file format. RAW image files, sometimes referred to as digital negatives, contain all the image information captured by the camera’s sensor, along with the image’s metadata (the camera’s identification and its settings, the lens used and other information).
Is NEF RAW better than JPEG?
A RAW image contains wider dynamic range and color gamut compared to a JPEG image. For highlight and shadow recovery when an image or parts of an image are underexposed or overexposed, a RAW image provides far better recovery potential compared to JPEG.
Can you shoot automatic in RAW?
No you can’t. RAW implies you want control, Auto mode implies you don’t. If you are shooting Auto, Canon figures you want it auto all the way to the JPEG. What you can do is shoot in P mode, though, which is close to AUTO in function.
Are RAW photos better quality?
Higher image quality translates into more available data when it comes to photo editing, giving RAWs a definitive edge over JPEGs. Editing programs like Adobe Camera RAW, Bridge, or Lightroom are built for fine-tuning RAWs into polished final photos.
Do I need to shoot in RAW?
You should always shoot raw if you’re taking photos in a situation where it is difficult to control highlight exposure. In a raw file, you can often restore detail to highlights that have overexposed to complete white and salvage otherwise unusable shots.
Is it bad to shoot in auto?
While it might not be the best way to get exactly the picture you want, and learning to shoot in manual is, of course, a rewarding and hugely beneficial way to increase your skills as a photographer, there is nothing inherently wrong with using Auto.

¿Cómo puedo grabar una fotografía en Raw?
En muchas ocasiones, varias fotografías estarán hechas en el mismo sitio y con la misma luz, por lo que podemos copiar los ajustes hechos en una fotografía y pegarlos en las restantes. Una solución que apliqué cuando empecé a disparar en RAW fue configurar en mi cámara el modo de grabar las fotografías en RAW + JPG.
¿Qué son las imágenes RAW?
Las imágenes RAW son por lo tanto una especie de «negativo», un fichero fuente del cual puedes obtener la imagen final que siempre será JPG. Porque no nos engañemos, por muchos detractores que haya de la edición o el retoque fotográfico, es el último paso de una fotografía, donde podemos aportar nuestra visión como artistas.
