How does the fuel injector work in a car?
Each tube terminates in a spring-loaded poppet valve that supplies fuel to its corresponding cylinder. The main injector is pulsed twice per crankshaft revolution, with pressurized fuel opening each poppet as system pressure approaches approximately 48 psi.
Why does my fuel injector stick open at idle?
Testing has shown that even slight changes in operating pressures can result in significant differences in the volume of fuel flowing through the poppet valves. EGR valves have been known to stick open on CPI engines due to carbon buildup. The result will be a rough idle, often accompanied by a failed emissions test due to high HC levels.

Some symptoms of a bad poppet valve are hard starting due to a leaking poppet valve, misfire codes, rough idle, loss of power and performance and a noticeable decrease in fuel economy. notice in the picture below how far the Poppet valve seats in the intake.

How does the fuel injector work on a Chevy truck?
Instead of spraying fuel directly into the manifold like a throttle-body injector, the MAXI injector routes fuel into six nylon fuel lines that have poppet-style spray nozzles on the end. When the pressure inside the lines reaches the opening pressure of the poppet valves (43 psi), fuel sprays out of the nozzles into the engine’s intake ports.
